Pinterest continued to combine visual search and ecommerce with its introduction Monday of a Shop tab in the results generated by its Lens visual search tool.
Pinners can click the camera in the search bar, snap or upload a photo and click on the Shop tab for a feed of shoppable product Pins related to in-stock products identified in the image.
Those shoppable product Pins link directly to retailers’ checkout pages.
Pinterest said in a blog post that it is seeing three times as many visual searches using its camera than at this time last year.
Roughly one-half of the items snapped via Lens are in the fashion and home décor categories, and the most-shopped products include prints/artwork, shirts/tops, dresses, shoes, jackets, vases, mirrors, rugs, pants and throw pillows.
Pinterest added that in the past few months, since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, trends it is seeing include: more searches for beauty products such as press-on nails, which are up 40%; searches related to sweatpants actually falling 12% in April compared with February; home office searches reaching their highest-ever levels, spiking by 2.7 times in April versus February; and record highs for backyard furniture searches, which are three times greater than this time in 2019, as well as grocery shopping list, which doubled in April from February.
The company wrote in its blog post, “Have worn-down running shoes and want to purchase a similar style from a different brand? Use Lens to shop in-stock products. You can also upload a screenshot you’ve snapped from another application or an older photo from your camera roll—such as artwork, a rug or pillows—and Lens will tell you what it is and where you can purchase it.”
